Stair Flooring in Jersey Village

Every trip up and down lands on the same narrow edge, so a staircase wears out sooner than the rooms it connects. We fit new treads, risers and nosings in hardwood, luxury vinyl or carpet, and we check the stair structure underneath before any new surface goes down.

When Your Stairs Need More Than a Patch

Stair flooring is its own kind of work. Every step has a horizontal tread, a vertical riser and a nosing at the front edge, and each one is cut and fastened by hand. A staircase with fourteen steps can mean dozens of separate pieces, all needing to sit level and quiet under daily traffic.

Many of our stair calls come after something went wrong upstairs: a roof leak during a heavy storm, a supply line that let go, an overflowing tub. Water runs downhill, and stairs are often where it ends up. When that happens, the sensible first move is to dry things out and find out whether the stair structure itself is sound. Then we can talk about new surfaces.

Other homeowners simply want stairs that match a new floor. If you are putting down luxury vinyl plank or hardwood flooring on the main level, carrying the same look up the stairs ties the rooms together.

What the Work Includes

Removal of old coverings
We pull worn carpet, tack strip, staples and old treads, then clean each step down to the stair structure so nothing loose is left behind.
A close look at the stringers and subtreads
With the steps bare, we check for soft spots, swelling or rot, especially after water damage. We show you what we find before deciding on next steps.
Treads and risers cut to each step
Older staircases are rarely uniform. Each tread and riser is measured on its own and cut to fit, so gaps stay tight at the walls and skirt boards.
Proper nosings
The front edge carries most of the load and most of the risk of a slip. We use nosings made for the material, whether that is solid wood, a matching vinyl stair nose or a carpet wrap.
Landings and transitions
We finish the landing and the top and bottom steps so they meet the adjoining floors cleanly, without awkward height changes.

Signs Your Stairs Are Due

  • Stains or swelling after a leak

Dark edges, cupped boards or a musty smell near the bottom of the stairs often mean water got in. It is worth looking under the surface soon, before trapped moisture spreads.

  • Squeaks and movement underfoot

A tread that shifts or creaks usually has loose fasteners or a failing glue bond. Left alone, it gets worse with every trip up and down.

  • Worn or loose nosings

Rounded, chipped or wobbly front edges are a tripping hazard, particularly for children and older family members.

  • Carpet that has flattened and frayed

Stair carpet wears fastest at the nose. Once the backing shows, it can catch a heel.

  • Stairs that no longer match

After new floors go in downstairs, old carpet or dated treads can make the staircase look like it belongs to another house.

How a Stair Job Runs

  1. 1

    A phone conversation first

You tell us what happened or what you want, how many steps there are and what is on them now. If there was water involved, we talk about drying before anything else.

  2. 2

    Measuring and choosing materials

We measure every step, note the stair style and walk you through materials that suit your traffic and the floors nearby. You get a clear, written estimate before work is scheduled.

  3. 3

    Clearing the old steps

When work starts, we lay protection over the landing and the flooring at the foot of the staircase. Old coverings come off, and any damaged subtreads you approved get repaired or replaced.

  4. 4

    Fitting each step

Treads, risers and nosings go on one step at a time, glued and fastened for a solid feel. We work from the top or bottom depending on access, so you know which areas to avoid.

  5. 5

    Cleanup and walk-through

We clear offcuts and dust, then walk the stairs with you and point out how to care for the new surface.

How Stair Work Is Priced

A staircase is quoted step by step, with its details counted separately, rather than by square footage the way a bedroom would be. Two sets of stairs with the same step count can land far apart once we see their shape and what lies beneath the old covering. We go through each line with you before you decide.

Number and shape of steps
Straight runs are simplest. Winders, curved steps and landings take more cutting and more time.
Material choice
Solid hardwood treads, vinyl stair kits and carpet each carry different material and labor costs.
Open sides and railings
Open-sided stairs need finished return ends, and working around balusters adds careful hand work.
Condition after damage
If water has weakened subtreads or stringers, those repairs come first. We only know the full picture once the old covering is off, and we show you photos before adding anything.

Stair Flooring Questions

Something not covered here? (346) 588-7323

Our stairs got wet when the roof leaked. What should we do first?

Pull back any wet carpet and pad if you can, and get air moving with fans. Do not cover damp stairs with new flooring, since trapped moisture leads to mold and loose treads. Once things are dry, we can check the structure and plan the replacement.

Will you help with our insurance claim?

We are not adjusters and cannot tell you what your policy covers. What we can do is document what we find with photos and give you a written, itemized estimate for the stair work, which many homeowners share with their insurer.

Can you match the stairs to new vinyl plank downstairs?

Usually, yes. Many luxury vinyl plank lines have matching stair nosings, and we can wrap or cap treads to carry the same color up the staircase. We will confirm the match when you choose your product.

Can we use the stairs while you work?

For part of the day, it is best to avoid them. We plan the work so you can get up and down at set times, and carpet stairs are often usable the same evening. Glued treads may need a few hours before regular traffic.

Is carpet or hard flooring better on stairs?

Carpet is softer and quieter and offers more grip. Hardwood and vinyl are easier to clean and hold up well, especially with good nosings. We can talk through which fits your household when you call.
