ServicesVinyl Composition Tile
Vinyl Composition Tile in Jersey Village
Vinyl composition tile is a hard, inexpensive-to-maintain floor that handles wet shoes, dropped tools and laundry spills. We install it in utility rooms, mudrooms and kitchens, and we replace tiles that lifted after a leak or storm, starting with a dry, sound slab.

A Practical Floor for the Rooms That Work Hardest
VCT is made mostly of limestone bound with vinyl, pressed into 12-inch squares and glued to the slab. It is firmer than luxury vinyl, takes a polished finish, and a single broken tile can be cut out and replaced without pulling up the whole room. That last point matters when water has crept under a door or a washer hose has let go.
It is the right call for a laundry room, mudroom, workshop, garage conversion or a kitchen where you want a classic checkerboard. If you want something softer underfoot or closer to the look of wood, our Luxury Vinyl Plank and Luxury Vinyl Tile pages are a better place to start.
After sudden damage, we look first at what the water did to the adhesive and the concrete below, then tell you plainly whether a patch repair will hold or the room needs a fresh floor.
What Our VCT Work Includes
- Moisture and slab check
- We test the slab for moisture before anything goes down. VCT adhesive releases when concrete stays damp, so laying tile over a wet slab only repeats the problem.
- Removal of lifted or broken tile
- We pull loose tiles and scrape old adhesive so the new tile grips clean concrete. Older 9-inch tiles can contain asbestos, so we recommend testing those before anyone disturbs them.
- Patching and leveling
- Cracks, low spots and pits get filled with a cement-based patch and sanded flat. VCT is thin and shows every ridge beneath it, so this step decides how the finished floor looks.
- Layout and setting
- We snap center lines so the pattern sits square to the room and cut tiles land at the edges, not in the doorway. Tiles are set in a thin spread of adhesive and rolled for full contact.
- Finish coats and cleanup
- New VCT is dull out of the box. We apply several coats of floor polish for a durable sheen, then clear away scraps, packaging and dust before we leave.
Signs Your Floor Is Ready for VCT Work
Tiles lifting after water
Corners curling or tiles sliding loose near a washer, water heater or exterior door usually mean the adhesive let go when it got wet.
Cracked or chipped squares
A dropped tool or heavy appliance can crack VCT. Replacing a few tiles is often all that is needed.
Dark seams or a sour smell
Staining along joints or a musty odor can point to moisture trapped underneath. That needs a look before more flooring goes down.
Worn, cloudy finish
Gray traffic paths that no amount of mopping brightens often mean the old tile is past saving or no longer holding tight to the slab.
A converted or unfinished room
A garage turned into a workshop or playroom needs a hard floor that tolerates grit and spills without fuss.
What Shapes the Cost of VCT
VCT tile itself is modest in cost, so most of the price comes from labor and the condition of the slab. A dry, flat floor goes quickly. A floor that has taken on water usually needs more prep, and we show you why before any of it is done.
Room size and shape
Square footage sets the tile and adhesive count. Closets, cabinets and angled walls add cutting time.
Slab condition
Cracks, old adhesive ridges and moisture problems add patching, grinding or drying time before tile can go down.
Removal and testing
Pulling one layer of newer tile is straightforward. Older tile that needs asbestos testing, or several stacked layers, adds steps.
Pattern and colors
A single color is the simplest. Checkerboards, borders and inset designs take more layout and cutting.
Matching existing tile
Spot repairs depend on finding a close color match. If none exists, replacing the whole room may look better.
How a VCT Job Runs
- 1
Phone conversation
You tell us the room, its size and what happened. If water was involved, we ask when it stopped and whether the source has been fixed.
- 2
Visit and written estimate
We measure, check moisture and look at the slab where tiles have come up. You get a written estimate that separates repair, prep and new tile, with photos of what we found.
- 3
Prep day
Furniture and appliances come out, doorways are protected, and old tile and adhesive are removed. Patching compound needs time to cure, so a damaged slab may take its own visit.
- 4
Installation and polish
Tiles are set, rolled and left to set up, then finish coats go on. We tell you how long to keep heavy items off and when the washer can go back.

Questions About Vinyl Composition Tile
Can you replace just the tiles that came up after a leak?
Often, yes. VCT is laid as individual squares, so we can cut out the affected ones and set new ones. The catch is color match and the condition of the slab beneath. If water spread under nearby tiles, those may need to come up too.
How long should I wait after water damage before new tile goes in?
Until the slab tests dry, which can take days or longer depending on how much water it absorbed. We check with a meter rather than guess. Laying tile early is the most common reason repairs fail a few weeks later.
Is VCT the same as luxury vinyl tile?
No. VCT is a rigid limestone-based tile that is glued down and polished. Luxury vinyl tile is softer, thicker and printed to look like stone or wood, with a factory wear layer. Our Luxury Vinyl Tile page covers that option.
Does VCT need special care?
It needs occasional polish to keep its shine and protect the surface. Day to day, a dust mop and a damp mop with a neutral cleaner are enough. Harsh cleaners strip the finish faster.
Will you help with my insurance claim?
We are not the adjuster, but we can give you a written estimate and photos of what we find under the old tile. Many homeowners share those with their insurer to support the claim.
